Not only does participating in sports affect the chances of a student receiving a higher level of education, but it has been proven that their time in the field also positively affected their social and emotional skills which elevates characteristics that are best fit for a manager position. This is proved by “Sports at Work: Anticipated and Persistent Correlates of Participation in High School Athletics” by Kevin M. Kniffin, because it evaluates two studies that contain information determining whether or not high school athletes make better workers than non-athletes. …show more content…
He discovered that the veterans that did play sports in the past had jobs that were in the upper management departments. He and his colleagues came to the conclusion that the perspective of jocks being self-assured and confident that the first group of people had stayed with these athletes throughout their life, and was transmitted to their workplace, helping them gain high ranking jobs. It is believed that since athletes were raised not to show fear even if they are in fact, afraid that they have mastered the act of alluding that they have an abundance of self-confidence which can be very beneficial when interviewing for a job involved with a leadership position. According to Dr. Catherine Sabiston the longer a person actively participates in a sport in their youth the least likely they are to show symptoms of depression as an adult. There was a study conducted at D’Youville College in 2005 that proved that the involvement in sports minimized the risks of suicide or drug abuse amongst teens. There are also studies that show that teen girls who participate in sports are up to eighty percent less likely to become pregnant. Overall the participation in sports positively impacts both the mental and physical health of teen’s when they are young which therefore leads to a much better health status for them in the future. These various studies result in my conclusion, that the effects of sports on teens benefit them now, and set them up for future success in both their professional and personal
