Alexandra Cole and Jennifer De Maio believe that in order to successfully assess students, the process of developing assessment tools needs to be a collaborative effort that includes faculty input. “There are obvious advantages to using standardized tests: they are traditional, widely recognized, and accepted means of assessment; they are not labor intensive; they can offer longitudinal data; and they can be useful as part of a multiple-method approach” (Cole & De Maio, 2009). Taking time away from instruction to drill-teach students on how to score higher on standardized tests is a disservice to them and denies them the quality of education that students deserve. I want my future students to have the freedom that allows for creativity and expression and I will not deny them that opportunity by promoting test-taking skills over meaningful learning. As an educator, it is essential to place the growth and development of the student as a priority over simply learning how to take standardized tests. Despite my dislike of high-stakes testing, it is likely to stick around as the main assessment to gauge educational success. All 15 tips are excellent to help me use formative assessments in the classroom, and I would try my best to use them all. I have no experience in a classroom so anything that I can get my hands on to help my students I’m willing to check it out. But for the purpose of answering this question, I picked “It’s not a quiz”, why? Because a lot of students including myself get a little anxious at the word “quiz” or “test” and unfortunately it can cause not to do the well on the quiz or test even when the student knows the material. Using Effective Feedback with Formative Instructional Practices How do I know as a teacher what my students have really learned? I often ask with this question while assessing student knowledge; however, most assessments aren’t always a true indicator of learning because they only provide part of the big picture of what an individual student truly knows. Teaching Philosophy Statement: My teaching philosophy is based on the belief that students need a safe learning environment in order for deeper understanding to take place. I believe, based on my prior experiences and research, that active learning allows students of all learning styles to gain a deep mathematical understanding of content. It is my belief that teachers use questioning strategies for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons include reviewing previous lessons, actively involving students in the lesson, assessing mastery of the goals and objectives, and helping them develop critical thinking skills. When I taught my first lesson in the classroom I felt that using questioning strategies enhanced the lesson material. When I used questions that seem to focus on important elements of the lesson it helped the student to better understand the material being presented.
