Now I know discipline is one- multifaceted as a theory and two- is about getting a child to understand why they’re being punished for the consequences of their actions, as opposed to just simply punishing them with no explanations. I think a lot of time we as adults whom either have our own children and/or whom work with children forget that children are inquisitive and are going to ask questions about everything, both good and bad. “Why am I in trouble?” “What did I do?” “Why can’t I participate in today’s activity?” And because we are the adults, we feel as though we don’t have to explain ourselves to someone still in elementary school or someone under the age of 18. But we do, and we should. It will help them to process the errors of their ways. According to a reading resource Dr. Bridger gave us this week, “Children need adults to teach them important life skills. They need to know the rules — what is okay and what is not okay (Basic Tools for Guiding Young Children’s Behavior, 2016).” In order for us to teach this skills effectively to the children we service or help raise on a daily basis, we should do things like: “keep rules simple and easy to understand…talk with children – not ‘at’ them…[and] teach children how to correct the effects of their behavior…(Basic Tools for Guiding Young Children’s Behavior, 2016).”
With that being said, I can see a huge difference in having a personal opinion without having knowledge on the subject and/or real-life experiences to back it up. Obtaining information as such as this will help families at home as well as teachers and/or child care providers in the work place. I can only wonder what will happen at work with my children over these next two days before the
