In order to persuade an audience speakers will use many approaches in order to appeal to whom they are speaking to. In Geronimo's speech, he uses pathos to make the reader feel emotional from his experiences. In his speech he uses ethos to help the audience feel sympathy for what has happened to him and his people. For example, Geronimo says “The soldiers never explained to the government when an Indian was wronged, but reported the misdeeds of the Indians.” showing that they were always viewed as the bad people to the government and no one is informed when the Indians were mistreated.…
Coca-Cola having been an iconic, refreshing brand for more than a century, must have been accustomed to copyright infringement. In 1970, the Coca-Cola brand was faced with the theft of their slogan, “It’s the real thing” by the publishing company, Grove Press for their advertisement of the Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher. The executive of the soda company, Ira Herbert, wrote a formal letter requesting for the Grove’s discontinue of their slogan as it threatened the brand’s originality. Richard Seaver, vice president of the Grove Press, wrote a letter in response to the request and unlike Herbert’s polite and serious manner, Seaver appeared to be far more arrogant. However, the difference between their appearances in the letters illustrates that Seaver is significantly more convincing.…

Guilt is a recurring theme in the novel, especially when it comes to Hans Hubermann when his life was spared in France during World War I thanks to Erik Vandenburg’s, whose life wasn’t spared. While World War I, Eric was in the army with him, the same group, and Eric is the reason Hans was able to stay behind when he suggested Hubermann to write a few dozen letters by coming up and saying his name along with “Immaculate handwriting, sir, immaculate” (Zuzak, 178). The rest of them got into a dangerous job that killed Eric. Thus, Hans is guilty because Eric could have stayed behind instead, and his life could’ve been spared instead of his, so he feels like he indirectly killed him.…
Ted Talks’ speaker and journalist Stephanie Busria is able to capture the audience’s attention in “How Fake News Does Real Harm” by delivering a true cautionary tale on the effects of fake news has society. The speaker’s strategic rhetoric allows the audience to be taken up enough to listen to her story. This then leads to believing the story and acting on it. Busria’s rhetoric follows the same script. In his essay, “Walking,” Henry David Thoreau discusses a number of ideas on wilderness and society, and makes several bold claims about society’s detrimental effect on the “wild.” He begins by expressing his affinity for taking long walks on which he “saunters” outdoors. Each author has their own strategies and method to persuade the audience in believing in their point of view. There are variety of rhetorical strategies that can be used depending on the author’s goal of what they are trying to convey. For example, pathos are used to manipulate a reader’s emotion by creating an emotional response.
