Pride is sometimes an important thing to have, but when we abuse it, it becomes destructive. Doodle is a young boy who is too weak to walk. HIs brother refuses to believe this, so he decides he will teach Doodle how to walk. One day, Brother was teaching Doodle, and Brother decided to run far ahead leaving Doodle behind. When he went back for Doodle, Doodle was dead. Pride can be a very destructive force, and it was so destructive that it ended a child’s life. In James Hurst’s short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, Brother is guilty of Doodle’s death because he is ashamed of Doodle, he was intentionally mean to Doodle, and he overworked Doodle.

One reason Brother is guilty is that he is ashamed of Doodle. Brother has always been embarrassed of Doodle. He says, “I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk…” (Hurst 346). Brother also reveals that he is very ashamed of Doodle when he admits, “Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” (Hurst 347). It is made very clear that Brother is filled with feelings of shame and embarrassment for Doodle.

Brother walked fast only because he knew Doodle would struggle to keep up. It is very obvious that Brother is mean to Doodle on
