Diabetes is a common condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high. This is because the body's method of changing glucose into energy is not working as it should. We obtain glucose from the food that we eat, either from sugary foods or from the digestion of starchy foods such as bread or potatoes. The liver can also make glucose from other foods.

• Salt substitutes will not help you lose the taste for salt and are not normally recommended.

It is still important to have regular meals and to reduce your weight slowly by gradually reducing your portion sizes and snacks. Activities such as walking, swimming, cycling, gardening and house work can all help to reduce weight.
