What is Love? When searching for the definition of love in the dictionary one would expect to find one simple statement that clearly defines the word; however when you look up the word “love” in the dictionary you find multiple definitions. The truth is there is not a set definition for the word love because it has a different meaning to each individual. Love is a complicated phenomenon that affects everyone differently. In the short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” it is clear that each character has a different perspective about love. From the story it is evident that there are no set rules for love, no set definition of love, and that married love is nothing but complicated. The story starts with four friends sharing drinks and conversations that somehow leads to the topic of love. The reader is immediately introduced to how Mel, the host for the evening, feels about the subject. “Mel thought real love was nothing less than spiritual love” (218). This is the impression Mel wants you to think that love is not in the form of agape and that it is strictly an Eros type of love. Mel believes that this is how love is because he has never felt an agape kind of love. The reader senses his annoyance with the love he has felt when he talks about both his current and pass relationships. For example, when Mel talks about his current relationship with Terri he says, “Excuse me for saying this but if something happened to one of us tomorrow I think the other one,…
