What does reading comprehension mean? Reading comprehension is an intentional, active, interactive process that occurs before, during and after a person reads a particular piece of writing. (K-12reader.com, 2008-2016) Therefore, simply put, to comprehend reading a person is making sense out of the information they are given. In schools teachers use strategies to help students learn the necessary concepts they need to graduate. Some of the strategies that teachers use are summarized below along with an example of how they can be used with a student who is struggling in reading. Comprehension strategies are approaches to reading used to help students to understand what they are reading. A literature circle is a type of comprehension strategy where students get together to discuss the text they are reading. Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review or SQ3R worksheets is another strategy to help struggling readers understand the text. This strategy can be used in conjunction with a literature circle. A benefit to this strategy is that students get to discuss what is being read with peers as well as the teacher so if they have questions they are able to get immediate answers rather than having to wait. However, other strategies work just as well depending on the situation.
Graphic organizers are another way to help students create meaning from a text they are working on by grouping information into categories to form the meaning of a word or group of words. Graphic…
