One of the long-standing questions about Christianity is “ What did Jesus look like? ”. This question has baffled many researchers, archeologists, and even Christians, for the Bible does not give an explicit description of Jesus. Many artists have painted pictures of the Messiah, but no one knows whose depiction of Christ is the correct one. In this paper, I will be analyzing three paintings that depict Jesus. The three paintings I will be analyzing are Head of Jesus by Warner Sallman, Jesus of the People by Janet McKenzie, and Reconstruction of the Face of Jesus, a scientific recreation of an Arabic man’s face who lived during the time of Jesus. As a basis of comparison, I will be using the Shroud of Turin. The Shroud of Turin is believed to be the burial clothes of Jesus. Over 1,500 years, the Shroud traveled from place to place until it was deeded to the House of Savoy in the 16th century, and transferred to Turin. The House of Savoy displayed it in a chapel until 1983 when the Shroud was given to the Holy See. In the late 18th century, a photograph was taken of the Shroud. When the photographer saw the photo’s negative, he saw a prefect image of a crucified man. The Shroud was studied in the late 20th century and scientists were left puzzled by the cloth. They originally believed the image was a simple painting, but after studying the Shroud, scientists concluded that only an intense source of light could have produced the image.
