there are more that 1.4 million people that are gang affiliated or know someone who is in a gang. There are several different categories of gangs that range from street gangs, prison gangs and also motorcycle gangs. These gangs usually are organized in urban or poverty stricken areas where crime runs ramped. Organized street gangs originated in major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami and New York. With gangs originating in these major cities, they began to migrate to other states and gang affiliation continued to rise in number and power. Not only do gangs terrorize the neighborhoods, they also bring drugs and other factors into the community. The individuals in the gangs profit from the drug sales, robberies and luxuries of others to keep the gangs healthy and thriving in the black community. While this does hurt gangs to a degree, the underlying causes that lead to gang affiliation are still present. Elimination of these cases will lead to drastic reductions in gang affiliation and activity. Some of these causes and their solutions have already been covered, but there are more than need to be addressed. One of the important causes, and a major financial supporter of gangs, is the strict drug legislation present in many states. North Carolina has already implemented many pieces of legislation that give some wiggle room on drugs such as marijuana, but other drugs (cocaine, amphetamines, etc.) are still very strictly regulated. While marijuana is decriminalized in North Carolina, it is still not cleared for recreational use. This serves as a major financial point for local gangs. Selling small or even large amounts of marijuana can provide gangs with the funds necessary to invest in more destructive products such as more dangerous/powerful drugs and weapons. New legislation regarding recreational use of marijuana would financially cripple many gangs in rural areas (Pitt County).These programs will take a community effort to organize and operate, but with dedication and participation from everyone we can virtually eliminate gangs in our
