Dave Reichert stated in a speech to the U.S. Congress, “These groups are a funnel to criminal activities, allowing a central point to encourage violence and a family that preaches drug trafficking, murder, prostitution and rape. In fact, street gangs are the primary distributor of illegal drugs in the United States”. According to an FBI finding, gangs are responsible for 48% of violent crimes and up to 90% of all crimes. If gangs were taken off the street violent crimes would be lowered by half. Out of the 486 murders in Chicago there would be 243 more people alive. In Chicago alone there are over 600 gangs. A victim of a ruthless murder Tyshawn Lee was only a kid that needed Chicago to crack down on gang violence. Throughout CHicago, children are rarely killed by gangs and when they are it is normally by unintentional crossfire. The major difference here is that Tyshawn Lee was not killed accidentally, He was targeted. Tyshawn Lee was a 9 year old boy living in southside Chicago. He was on his way to his Grandmother's house when he stopped at Dawes Park. Her was just looking to play on the swing set and had a basketball near him. There were three men who were at the park with him. Two of the men drove off in their black SUV and one stayed behind and walked up to Tyshawn. He tricked him into coming into a back alley and the SUV carrying two men showed up again. The three men were apart of a gang named the Black P Stones. The man who lured Tyshawn into the alley shot him 5 times and the group fled the scene. On the killing it was said, “Our children have a right to walk the streets…. Our children have a right to expect to be safe wherever they are in the city of Chicago… Tyshawn was doing what every child has a right to do: be a child” (Pfleger qtd. by Melvin). This is a true statement. Children shouldn’t be victims of murder. Tyshawn Lee was targeted because of his dad’s gang relations. Children shouldn't be punished for another person’s mistake. In the quote Melvin shows us this. Gangs are creating a problem that is affecting everyone. Children should be allowed to just play with friends outside without any fear. Children are unable to go outside because gangs are murdering people no matter who they are. They could care less about if you are old or young they will still kill. Chicago needs to get these gangs off of the street and make Chicago safe. People should be able to live their life without the
