Introduction
Water is one of the most important substances on earth and it plays an important role in our lives. We use water for numerous things such as agriculture, maintaining ourselves clean, and most importantly to keep us alive. I believe one of the most important contributions that we can do to improve the environment and our society is water conservation. Water conservation refers to any way we can reduce the amount of water we use as well as the preservation of water quality. This can be done by implementing water efficiency measures and one of the best ways to do that is by having awareness. Some of the things I did was taking shorter showers, and turning off the water while soaping my hands and brushing my teeth. In order to calculate how much water, I was conserving, I had to first see how much water comes outs of my facets. About 16 gallons per minute comes from the shower and approximately 2 gallons per minute comes from my kitchen facet and about 1.5 gallons per minute comes from my bathroom faucet. This was done by turning on the faucet and seeing how much water was used. Since I didn’t want to waste that water I used it to water my plants in the backyard
By using this information, I was able record my data by using a stopwatch and calculating how much water I was conserving. One of the most influential reasons on why we should conserve water is because it can reduce our water bills and save us money. Another benefit of conserving water is the prevention of depleting reservoirs and groundwater aquifers. If this were to happen lower water levels will cause it to have higher concentrations of contaminations such as arsenic. By conducting this experiment, I found out that most of my water usage comes from taking a shower. If every household in America would decrease the amount of time they would take a shower this would drastically reduce the amount of water we use today. Other ways in which we can encourage people to decrease the amount of water usage is by informing them that they would decrease their water bill every month. Another way is to convince Americans to invest in devices in which regulate the amount of water that goes through the facets. Installing a drip irrigation in our households is another great way to conserve water. Many households have this, but some do not. The use of spray irrigation over waters plants and is less efficient. Drip irrigation slowly and directly delivers water to the root of the
