Walt Disney : A Man Once Said Essay
This legendary man was named Walter Elias Disney. Walt Disney was born to Flora and Elias Disney on December 5, 1901 in Chicago. At the time, he had three older brothers, Roy, Raymond, and Herbert. Soon after Walt was born, poor immigrants began to move into Disney’s neighborhood, which caused the Disney family to move to a remote farm in Missouri. Walt enjoyed living on the farm and developed a special relationship with the animals (1). At an early age, Roy supported Walt’s creative side. Walt enjoyed visits from Uncle Edmud, especially because he always brought candy. A few years later, the Disney family sold the farm and moved to Kansas City (2).
In high school, Walt’s drawings were printed in the school newspaper, which encouraged him to attend classes at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. These classes influenced him to become a newspaper cartoonist. During WWI, Walt—who was too young to enlist—forged his parents’ signature for consent to become a member of the Red Cross ambulance in France (3). Walt began his first real artist job at the Pesmen-Rubin Commercial Art Studio. Here, he drew artwork for theater programs. In 1920, Walt and his friend, Ub Iwerks, founded Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists. Unfortunately, this company failed, but Walt was able to successfully sell cartoons to the Newman Theater under “Newman Laugh-O-Grams (4).”
