Volunteering has been a source of community enrichment. No matter the social statue, people have attributed time to impact others. Volunteerism is when a person uses their own time or talents for the greater good in their community. In an article authored by Stephanie Rosenburg, she says “Today, nearly one in four Americans, an estimated 64.3 million people, have served as volunteers” (Rosenburg). The internet has strongly helped contribute to these numbers with advertising allowing people to find opportunities in their community. In times of great despair, we need volunteers to not only help the afflicted but to provide strong hearted comfort. However, volunteering does not have to be done during times of harsh adversity. It can be done in ways such as volunteering to clean your church or working at a soup kitchen to feed the homeless. Sometimes, even the simplest of acts can have an impact, and as volunteers, that is what we strive for. With no money involved or personal financial benefits, a sense of selflessness is needed to focus on the tasks at hand. However, much knowledge can be gained, and that is why I plan to volunteer at the North Mississippi Medical Center. By volunteering at North Mississippi Medical Center, I can gain useful knowledge for my future career, associate with knowledgeable colleagues, and benefit the lives of those in my care.
