Homelessness is a very serious issue not only in our area, but all over the United States. According to statistics, there are approximately 578,424 individuals that are experiencing homelessness(National Alliance to End Homelessness). This epidemic, so to speak, is so widespread that it reaches into every state and impacts every community. In most cases, the people who are homeless cannot help that they are without a home. The circumstances of the homeless individual’s position could be that they were laid off their job or couldn’t make the payments of their rent or the house foreclosed.
Specific to the Wilmington area, there are approximately 400 people without a home. In this area, this is a significant number. Wilmington has eight shelters

We used donated purses from my mom and I, and filled them with products that women in the area would need. The contents of the purse were things such as lotion, soap, deodorant, feminine products, and a protein bar. These things are essential to women and women who do not have the funds to purchase them might not be able to get them in any other way. We then delivered the purses to the Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington for the staff there to distribute them to the ladies that need them the most. We were able to have the opportunity to sit down with the ladies and talk to them about their struggles and hear some of their inspiring stories. The Good Shepherd Center is a wonderful, resourceful area that is very popular in the Wilmington city. A part of the center’s mission is to help aid in the transition into housing for its individuals. This makes the center stand apart from some of the others because it takes the shelter a step farther by wanting to help its residents be successful and be able to get into housing. The center also is only funded 26% of its total fund by the government. This means that the shelter relies heavily on the community and other resources to help aid them financially so that they can in return support those who attend the …show more content…
Through our project, we raised awareness of the need in our community and the resources that are there to help, such as the Good Shepherd Center. By our research and service to the community, I believe that we made an impact on some of the women that were recipients of the purses and the effort behind them. I also know that the shelter is appreciative of the service we performed. This project was a blessing to me because it showed me what an impact we can make in our community with something as small as a purse. It’s a reflection of taking something that is simple and making a difference with it. I am so glad that we did this project because it gave my group a great feeling, especially near the holidays, of giving

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

With the help of the community and the student body we hoped to raise money and supplies for over 100 foster children in the Des Moines area going through the Department of Human Services. With all of us working together it didn’t take long to come up with a game plan of how we wanted to go about successfully completely this project. We divided the project between clinical groups and each group had a different age range. Monday’s clinical group had school-aged children, Tuesday’s clinical group had high school, and Wednesday’s clinical group…

The “We Care We Share” service initiative was conceived in the spring of 2012, in a youth group meeting between several of my friends and I. We meet once a month to prepare hot food, often pasta or chili, and travel to homeless shelters in the city to serve the needy. In late November, we make winter care packages and distribute them to the homeless, providing them with supplies that would help them bear the cold, such as scarves and gloves. Being one of the founding members of this initiative, I have been involved in all aspects, from its conception to actually serving the food. I was originally responsible for creating rotation lists, determining who would purchase the ingredients, who would cook, and who would serve.…

Two years ago at Santa Ana, I saw a homeless man on a curb next to a parking lot of ABC Supermarket begging for money. I pitied him and reached out 3 dollars in my pocket and gave him my money. He said,“God bless you” and gave me a distinctive smile. I remember to this day, seeing him so happy brought me such joy. The pleasure of helping an unfortunate man felt warming and rewarding.…

Studies done by the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless show that from 2013-14 there were roughly 138,575 people living homeless in the city of Chicago alone. This is an increase of 19.4% in just one year. Chicago Public Schools identified 22,144 homeless students in 2013-14 which is an 18.6% increase from the prior school year. With steadily increasing rates it would seem only logical that the city would work to increase the amount of shelters provided for these people in need. Unfortunately, the number of homeless people in need of shelter far exceeds the number of shelters provided.…

First, we browsed the internet and pinterest looking for an idea of what to do for my project. Then, I came across an idea named “blessing bags for the homeless” where these people made small care packages with useful stuff that homeless people can use. So, we decided that this idea was what we were going to do. After that, we decided to plan out what we were going to buy, by looking at the dollar tree website, and seeing how much it would cost so that we knew exactly how much we each needed to pay since we were going to split the cost. Since we were still trying to successfully complete the project affordably, we decided to purchase the items at the dollar tree.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
