Volunteering At Homeless Shelter

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community. People of all ages showed up to help; even kids as young five years old provided valuable help! We needed all the help we could gather, since we had our work cut out for us as we enthusiastically started our work for the day.

There were multiple jobs that were needed to be done in order to serve food to the people at the shelter. Some kids

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I also would kindly ask people to donate as they came in or out of the mall. I kept a kind and loving smile on my face to welcome anyone who was willing to donate.…

Audrey Hepburn once said “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” I have been very fortunate to discover the incredible rewards of volunteering at a young age, and through engaging in the true gift of service I have committed myself to making a difference in my community through voluntarism. I have learned countless valuable skills through volunteering that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. One of the most amazing places to volunteer is the Little Light House. That helped me look at life in a simpler way, and taught me to put aside anything I was going through to make this young student’s day. I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. I’ve also helped at a farm share held for homeless families in CHD shelters, which provides them with free…

Volunteering at the Pine Street Inn, one of the largest nonprofit organization in New England serving homeless men and women, affected me to deeply fathom homelessness. I came on Sunday mornings at 5 a.m as a lunch lady, serving healthy well-proportioned breakfast meals that unfortunately, would not suffice their hunger. I was terrified and apprehensive of what was to come. I caught myself on the first day in thinking these individuals as subhuman. I thought I would be serving shaggy crazy individuals.…

My fieldwork involved learning the ways of the homeless population. During the week of March 21st 2016 a group of about 3 others, and myself walked down to the Marion Soup Kitchen dressed in run down cloths, and a somber faces. My goal was to truly be able to immerse myself in the culture of the homeless population, and learn their struggles unfiltered by an outsider’s perspective. My journey was nerve racking, depressing, and eye opening to say the least, but I wouldn’t trade it because of all the things I learned, and people I met. During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
