“Who is the model and why has she been painted?” This is the question people have been asking for years. One of the most loved paintings in the world is a mystery. So much about this painting is unknown, almost making it more attractive. The attentive look of the young girl in the painting makes the viewer feel as if he or she has caught the girl’s attention, and she is turning to look at them. Although the name of the girl in this painting has never been confirmed, many believe her to be Vermeer’s eldest daughter painted at around the age of thirteen. She is believed to have been a model, but also a painter. In fact, it is said that she painted one fifth of all of Vermeer’s works of art. The girl is depicted in a “thought provoking stillness.” The wide eyes of the girl depict fear, as well as love, mystery, and also trust. The eyes of the girl seem to be interacting with the painter. The way that the girl is looking over her shoulder has been depicted in paintings many times throughout history. For example, the idea of the turban may have been inspired by the Man in a Turban by Jan van Eyck which was painted in the fifteenth century.
