It took Shoun Genkei from 1684 to 1695 to complete this statue of Rakan. Rakan was created out of lacquered wood with traces of gilding, which is where Genkei applied a gold color of paint onto the wood to give it more of a “glow” and add some extra features to face and other areas. Rakan is a sculptor replicating a “guard” of the Buddhist religion, which Genkei was a follower of. This masterpiece meant the most to him because it took him 11 years to perfect. There are many other pieces similar to Genkei’s but none have the exposure like his. The statue is 36 1/2 x 31 x 28 in.
A Place for Your Intentions. A sculptor made of glass and lead which is probably not one of the best substances to use but it didn’t stop Hawk from making a magnificent piece of art. She bases her sculptures off of humans and how their real state may appear compared to the usual exact replica of a human. Despite the great difference in the art they can still be brought together through meaning. They appear to be very different but are not. They both show great meaning the artist and how they felt about the work. Genkei’s love for the religion is profound in his art and especially in his sculpture of the Rakan. The meaning of life is very profound in Hawk’s work because she uses human like beings to show emotional states of people. Rakan has mass while A Place for Your Intentions has shape and more detail. Both of the artists are sculptors and both of their pieces of art are sculptures. A Place for Your Intentions draws people too it because it is very odd and vague while Rakan draws people’s attention because most people see that and know it is about Buddhism or relates to it in some way. Genkei’s work took him time to create and perfect, Hawk’s didn’t take her as long as 11 years but still was able to make great work out of
