Housing programs are very crucial for low-income people and if these people cannot get the support they need, many people will end up on the streets with no where to go. Housing programs are striving for insufficient funding at the federal, state, and local levels. One program that is dealing with budget cuts is the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which means outstandingly reduced resources in Sacramento. A major loss to the Sacramento community was the ending of the Homelessness Prevention & Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP), funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. During these economic times, physical and mental health care has been decreasing. At the State level, California has faced significant funding shortfalls; forcing deep budget cuts in these critical support services (Sacramento Steps Forward). I went down to Sacramento, Loaves & Fishes homeless shelter and asked a few homeless people if they live near healthcare buildings to make it easier if they have health problems. Most of them said that they live near resources that are helpful to them. For example, one said that they like to hang around or live near the Del Taco in down Sacramento, because that is where other homeless people are at and some of them are his friends. It is also easy for him to pay handle in that area because there is a Safeway and other fast food restaurants on that block, which is on K Street. There is a clinic near Del Taco for low-income or homeless people to get treatment, but John said, “It is always crowded there and a very dirty building, plus a lot of people hang out in front of the building, so there is always police presence and who tell people to stop loitering.” Homeless people are conjugated in these certain spaces of the city because these spaces cater to their needs and also easier to access them.
