Up, Up and Away “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” This quote from Neil Armstrong as he set foot on the moon as the first human ever to do so, was not only a significant moment for America, but for the entire world. In movies such as Armageddon, WALL-E and most recently, Interstellar: Viewers are transported into a world of fear where the survival of the human race depends on space technology and exploration. While movie goers can be comforted by the fact these films are fiction, that comfort might be short lived; there is evidence to assume that in the near future, the human race will rely on the same technology and exploration as it did in the movies. Space exploration and funding is something that needs to be continued as well as increased. With limited resources on the planet, the carrying …show more content…
There have been countless examples where space technology has and continues to, improve and benefit human life. In the year 1957 on October 4, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite into orbit around the earth. This new technology was called Sputnik I and could orbit the earth in just ninety- eight minutes (“Sputnik” 1). With the fear that Sputnik I had the potential to launch missiles, the United States formed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or simply, NASA (“Sputnik” 2). It was not until the release of the Sputnik II, that the United States managed to launch the Explorer I on January 31, 1958 (“Pros and Cons of Space Exploration” 5). Thus began the race to reach the first man on the moon, better known as the “Space Race.” Eventually, the United States won that race on July 20, 1969 as the Apollo 11 shuttle landed and Armstrong set foot on the moon (“Pros and Cons of Space Exploration”
