A teacher responded, “It isn’t a question of what students want. It’s what the school may have available” (Kozol 10). In contrast to the courses given at Beverly Hills High School, Fremont High School students are forced to take courses linked to low paying jobs. While this argument for poverty remains true, after the seminar, I realized that Capitalism was the main cause of poverty as it influenced all the other causes. Capitalism is an economic system in a country's trade and industry is controlled by private owners for profit. At first I though this system is successful because it gives individuals the right to keep what they earn however, this system is more problematic. Capitalism influences Globalization because private businesses have the power to exploit cheap labor in poor countries. Capitalism also has a huge influence over racism. As a society, we know that racism plays a big role in job placement. It is noted that if you compare two individuals of black and white with equivalent skills applying for the same job, the white individual will land the job (Pager and Shepherd).
