In the real world, progress is made in society when people want to make a change. A way this is done is by protesting which has also become popular among many universities, but has been limited by regulations. Jordan Freidman presents an example of this in his article, “UC Davis …show more content…
Students need to learn that not everyone is going to agree with what they say. They must gain the experience of voicing their beliefs and defending their opinions, in order deal with opposition or social criticism from other students that may disagree with them. For example, if a student is against abortion, they must be prepared to take ownership of words and defend their stance to other students who may critic their position. This is important because when people’s beliefs are challenged, it is common to feel a lot of anger and frustration, so students must learn to deal with this backlash and criticism. If people don’t know how to tolerate and listen others opinion, then no progress in any debate will be made. This is what happens when speech is regulated on college campuses because students do not hear other student’s opinion because debates controversial issues are shut down in fear of offending others. This will only hurt them in the real world, when they don’t know how to tolerate different opinions and face conflicts with
