College is supposed to teach students freely and discuss material that open ups the mind without limitation. According to college professor Lisa Hjjar, “Any kind of trigger policy is inimical to academic freedom” (Medina). An example of this would be if an English professor wants to read the book “The Adventures Huckleberry Finn”. This book has many trigger warning on it because of the numerous racial slurs. But, the book also has a moral teaching behind it that is expressed throughout the book as well. Though, this book may be uncomfortable for some people to read, trigger warnings cannot protect them from this issues that are prominent in the outside would. Trigger warnings influences on students are very powerful. Trigger warnings though may be beneficial in some ways; but by codling the minds of upcoming adults is more harmful. Students should read the syllabus on the first day it is given out; and if they come across some material that causes uncomfortable emotional or physical reaction. They can also go up to the professor and example the situation at hand and try to find a solution of it.
