Types Of Car Engines And Ignition Engines Essay

709 Words 3 Pages
There are numerous types of car engines which can be categorized depending upon the ignition system, total number of cylinders, block design, camshaft location, strokes per cycle, cooling system and so on. Presently deployed ignition system are spark ignition (gasoline engine) and compression ignition (diesel engine) which use different types of fuel.
The required voltage for ignition system is generated from a 12 volt battery (which are generally lead-acid type and a series connection of galvanic cells) and is supplied to each sparkplug in the engine 's combustion chambers in turn, igniting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Spark Ignition is a general term used for petrol engines, where the spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture and the combustion of air-fuel mixture takes place in a cylinder. In contrast to compression-ignition engines, pressurized diesel, in absence of any external spark it generates enough heat (compression technology) for the combustion process which is used to move crank shaft. The working cycle of both spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines may possess either two-stroke or four-stroke engine depending upon number of strokes in a cycle. Furthermore they can be splitted into two types, the one with Battery Ignition System (using 12v battery), and other with Magneto Ignition System(generating power using coils). Both of them follow the same principle of electromagnetic induction (Interaction of magnetic field with electric…
