Type 2 Diabetes and patient teaching Teaching people about the causes, symptoms, treatments and preventive measure of type 2 diabetes. Hopefully by getting the information out there we can lower the people effected by diabetes of all kinds. The most common is type 2. Diabetes affects 27 million people in America. 1/3 of the people don’t even know they have it. Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans have a higher risk in America. In adults 1 in 10 people suffer from diabetes. With education people who are at risk can hopefully lower their chances of developing this disease and people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can manage this disease.
Causes and risk factors of type 2 diabetes
Genetics and lifestyle are the most common risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Being overweight, smoking, lack of physical activity, high alcohol intake and high blood pressure are other common risk factors. Insulin resistance is the most common form of type 2 diabetes. The pancreas tends to still make insulin but its either not enough or the body just doesn’t know what to do with it. Without insulin the sugars (glucose) can’t get to the cells of the body so it builds up in the bloodstream causing high blood sugar.
Signs, Symptoms and complications of type 2 diabetes
When your blood sugar is high from diabetes it is called hyperglycemia. Excessive thirst, fatigue, blurry vision, wounds that are slow to heal and frequent urination are common
