Healthy People Diabetes
Healthy People 2020 is a10-year agenda that focuses on improving health for all Americans. Healthy People 2020 prioritizes public health issues within the nation, sets goals to address them, and monitors the progress of the initiatives taken on individuals and communities in order to see the impact of their prevention. This paper will focus on the public health issue of diabetes within the United States adult population. According to Healthy People 2020, diabetes is a condition in which an individual's body can no longer produce enough insulin, or their body cannot respond properly to insulin (United States Department of Health and Human Services[HHS], Healthy People, 2020, 2018). It is a public health issue as 30.3 million people in the United States have diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017). This statistic includes individuals who are diagnosed and have not been diagnosed with diabetes. If not treated or managed well, it can lead to other serious health issues such as kidney failure, lower limb amputations, onset blindness, or other long-term complications (HSS, Healthy People 2020, 2018). 30.2 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, are part of this group (CDC, 2017). According to the CDC, 4.6 million Americans, ages 18-44, and 14.3 million Americans, ages 45-64, have diabetes (CDC, 2017). As a person reaches a higher age, the condition of type 2 diabetes becomes more prevalent. In addition to this, men tend to be at greater risk for diabetes as 15.3 million men have diabetes, while only 14.9 million women have the condition (CDC, 2017). In terms of race/ethnicity, prevalence of diabetes is higher in American Indians as they represent 15.1% of the diabetic population, following with non-Hispanic blacks who consists of 12.7% of the population, Hispanic ethnicity totaling 12.1%, non-Hispanic whites consisting of 7.4% and with Asians representing 8% of the population (CDC, 2017). Among all of these statistics, type 2 diabetes is a public health issue that is more prevalent with those who are older, those who are men, and those who consist of American Indian race, non-Hispanic blacks, or Hispanic
