Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce adequate amounts of insulin, or does not properly use the insulin that it does produce. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. These two different issues concerning insulin are categorized into two separate types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is when the body does not produce enough insulin, type 2 diabetes is when the body does not use the insulin it does make properly. Diabetes is a life altering disease that affects people all across the United States.…

It is important that as a pharmacist and really any healthcare provider, we keep an open mind and empathize with patients who are going through a rough time. The suicide of Andie’s older sister…
ANSWER 1 IDDM: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease, which starts to develop in childhood it was known as juvenile onset as well. It is a progressive destruction of autoimmune pancreatic beta cells depending upon the individuals. Genetically individuals develop islets of autoantibodies from months to years before diagnosing type 1 diabetes. Glucose level is increased as the body starts to produce low level of insulin and glucose is eliminated in the form of urine. Weight loss, frequent urination, excessive hunger and thirst are the common symptoms of type 1 diabetes.…

In addition, it was a struggle and an adjustment for her family to learn how to properly take care of a little girl with Type 1 Diabetes. Her parents had to learn to count carbohydrates for everything she ate or drank. They realized that she had to eat at a certain time every day and could never eat or drink anything without counting carbs again. In addition, it was a struggle for the family to help her overcome the fear of needles and multiple injections. Furthermore, her mother struggled with the school nurses to help properly take care of her while she was in school and she eventually had to quit her job to ensure her daughter had the proper care.…
Initially, I did not make the necessary dietary changes or engage in physical exercise often enough. Nor had I made a habit of injecting myself with insulin before consuming carbohydrates to prevent the nauseously unpleasant -and unhealthy- experience of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Due to this clumsy control, my blood sugar generally ran afoul and the corresponding fatigue hampered my academic and athletic ability. This, combined with a shyness and ill-conceived embarrassment of having diabetes at an early age, led to me not fully embracing needed lifestyle changes. These changes proved necessary for me to live a healthy and more assertive life, and learning to implement them bolstered my confidence when overcoming other challenges I faced while living remotely in Big Sky…

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 is an emerging epidemic. The disease is a chronic autoimmune condition in which a person’s pancreas does not produce insulin, a hormone that allows energy to metabolize from food. The disease occurs when the person’s immune system attacks and destroys the pancreatic beta cells causing insufficient release of insulin into the blood. There are currently 1.25 million Americans that are living with T1D Mellitus, with about 20 percent of them being children. [1] Type 1 diabetes can be controlled to an extent through proper diet, exercise, insulin injections and blood glucose monitoring.…
Diagnosis Diabetes can be defined from two different perspectives. A medical’s perspective is defined as a series of metabolic condition linked to hyperglycaemia and caused by defects in insulin secretion, and some complications include the eyes, kidneys and peripheral nerves. A patient’s perspective is defined as a lifelong condition requiring change in your daily diet, monitoring blood levels and visits to the doctor. There are four different categories of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an inadequate production of insulin to the pancreas, usually in children and young adults.…
