In 1995, Triple J created a youth radio station dedicated to helping up and coming Australian artists have a launchpad into the music industry. I have been listening to Triple J Unearthed since 2013, discovering new upcoming Australian artists and bands. The interaction will discuss how Triple J Unearthed has exposed me to unestablished Australian artists. I have looked at what bands I have found out about through the listening service. I also looked into how the website is set up, how it allows artists to win experiences of a lifetime and how the users interact.
Triple J Unearthed is a website that users can upload their songs to. These songs have the opportunity to be played on Unearthed digital and online radio and then possibly further to Triple J. Example of famous Australian artists who started on Unearthed are Flume, Grinspoon and Missy Higgins. It interests me because a good number of these artists would not have been discovered and I would not have been listening to them right now without the station. Without Unearthed many artists would still be playing songs in their garages and local pubs if they are lucky. I regularly visit the website and stream the radio station to discover new artists. I also check what competitions are running and what artists are trending to see what new music there is. The site currently has over 99,000 tracks uploaded (ABC Triple J, 2015) I first became interested in Unearthed during the advertisement campaign for 2013 Unearthed High. The winner has the opportunity to record their song at Triple J studios and receives the leg up they need for the music industry. This year they have the opportunity to get advice about the industry from Alison Wonderland, Art vs Science and Northlane. Many bands become well known through this competition. I have started listening to Hockey Dad, Jesse Davidson, SAFIA and Meg Mac through this. Rip It Up, an Adelaide based music news site said, “Those Unearthed High kids sure do stick together”, which can specifically be seen through Japanese Wallpaper and Jesse Davidson beginning to collaborate after discovering each other through the site and Unearthed High competition (Frangos, 2014). Both artists have been on the …show more content…
These festivals are Splendour in the Grass, Falls festival and Soundwave. This year’s winner who had the chance to open Splendour on the main stage was Tired Lion. From doing this, it has opened this band up to a huge potential new audience. Many past Unearthed acts also performed at the esteemed festival. A few of my past favourites have been, Tkay Maidza, Client Liaison, and Dune Rats. This festival, in union with Unearthed, is an important thing to lead to an up and coming artists career in music. The Delta Riggs are a band who were previously on the Unearthed website and are no longer there because they were signed to Inertia Music. Triple J hosted a competition this year for attendees on Groovin the Moo where listeners could win a breakfast with the band. I was lucky enough to win this opportunity along with my sister and our friends. They discussed with us how Triple J Unearthed and then later on the main station of Triple J had helped them to become a better band. Through Triple J’s help they toured nationally with Groovin the Moo and headlined their own national
