Szymon's Tigersapp

In the world of music, an album’s artwork is essential to the communication of an artist’s message. The artwork reveals a great deal about the artist and allows the listener to better connect the sounds they hear to the emotions of who creates them. This connection can only enhance the listener’s experience, and help them to more fully understand the meaning behind the art. A perfect example of this type of connection comes from an album created by Australian musical artist Szymon. This album is the first and last studio album of his career, titled “Tigersapp.” It is one of the most brilliant, memorable, and inspiring records of the past few years from a strictly musical standpoint. However, once you learn the story behind the album, you gain …show more content…
The colors present on the album are very dull and quite sobering. These colors were intended to represent the emotions of Szymon himself. On the cover he is depicted atop a grey rocky surface, surrounded by a beige border, in front of a robin’s egg blue square. All of these colors fail to catch the eye and do not garner our attention whatsoever due to their general lifelessness. This lack of vibrance of the album artwork shows Szymon’s view of the world during the time he created this album. He created the album, as stated previously, while suffering from depression. According to his brother Kubush, Szymon struggled to complete the masterpiece of an album due to his illness. “When he became unwell, it was harder for him to concentrate and focus on it. His battle with his health, the medicine an treatment as well, made it hard for him.” says Kubush (McCabe). His battle with his illness is symbolized by the pale blue color. This is because sadness is commonly represented by the color blue, and on the cover you can see that the majority of his body is trapped in the blue square. Sadness is consuming him mentally, and on the album artwork, it shows him being physically trapped by it. His depression also made the world seem dull and lackluster to him. It lacked the life and vibrance that it had once possessed, and like a faded photograph, it will never be able to be restored of its color. No matter how hard Szymon tried, he was unable to see things in the way they used to be. His view of the world was forever damaged. The color of his clothing is very symbolic as well. Upon the rocks, Szymon is clothed head to toe in only one color, black. The sweatshirt he is wearing is black, his pants too, as well as his shoes. It is common knowledge that black is almost always be associated with death and sorrow. Unfortunately, death and sorrow happen to be related to depression. Szymon,

“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country”-Charles E Weller. The call to action is one of decisive and prudent mentality that starts with a simple “yes”, yet time and time again, hesitancy hinders the simple stimulus that could inadvertently change lives. Partly due to fear and uncertainty, the other majority derives from fondness for the shallow, calm waters of life, but unless a strong gale sets human immobility into motion, there will be no call to action. Well, at least not in a way shown by the Atlanta Boys Choir. The willingness to act on social inequality and the true generosity of the ABC was my impetus to comprehend the imperfections of my vicinity.…

With heartfelt lyrics, the musician Death Cab For Cutie portrayed his song “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” through a stop-motion video consisting of a book of drawings. There was symbolism riddle throughout the entire video, including the lyrics, with the drawings of people, animals, and inanimate objects. The video follows the life of two bunnies that are in love and between the shots of the bunnies, there are drawings of people with writing around them, similar to a journal entry. Around the journal/book being used there is a small cup of coins, a picture of a woman and a postcard in a frame, a clock, keys, and a ruler and pencil. These small details and the song paired with the video create an emotional, well thought out piece of art with many different meanings.…

The Art of Listening Reproduction of originals is a quality that exists in all facets of life. Much of what is created lacks originality, instead, it is a reproduction or reinterpretation of a previous original idea. In Jeff Turrentine essay Why Some Covers Disappoint, he attempts to dissect what makes a good cover song, seeking to find answers about why some ‘copies’ are less impressive than the original. Paul McCartney’s album of covers “Kisses on the Bottom” which Turrentine dismisses as a failure of the artist to provide a creative remake of the original works is the main subject of his essay. Furthermore, Turrentine finds cover songs that lack a distinct difference from the original song or a controversial edge failure to deliver a quality…

Dear Reader: Before you read this paper, please consider the following requests. First, and most importantly, listen to at least 1 minute of Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica. It is available on YouTube for free. Consider that this bizarre, atonal, virtually unlistenable album is regarded as one of the most influential rock albums of all time, and was ranked No. 60 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums. Finally, considering Captain Beefheart’s unlikely place in the rock pantheon, ask yourself whether music must be “good” in order to have value.…

The string that ties this piece together is music. In “Sonny’s Blues” the author utilizes music to highlight the themes of a loss of innocence, suffering, and self-discovery and develop the plot. The imagery created by Baldwin deepens the text to be about so much more than just Sonny’s struggle with drugs. It helps to create an understanding of the human experience as well as encompass how a new wave of jazz music developed into a form of self-expression. Leaving at the end, a picture of hope despite the presence of…

When people experience a piece of art, be it a painting or pieces of music, we often forget to take in the creator’s intentions and why certain aspects were chosen to complete the piece. Many pieces of art express the artist’s response to an event that occurred during that time period. Others have virtuous intentions to share with the audience, and some pieces show the artist’s creative aesthetics that differentiate his or her piece from other works. The Beatles’ song, “Revolution,” historically responds to the Vietnam War and the protests against it, and had moral intentions to invoke peace and non-violence to listeners. Furthermore, the artist aesthetically differentiates the song by recording three versions.…

Over the years, the struggle of becoming a popular artist in the music industry has gotten more and more competitive. Artists would struggle to find something that made them stand out from the rest, and eventually give up on trying to be illustrious, conforming to the basic chord structures and rhythms of every other popular tune. However, for twenty seven years, the expressionistic band Radiohead has constantly risen above the musical standards, ignoring everything about classical music theory and the common practice. Using poetic lyrics, engaging theoretical structure, and assonate rhythms, Radiohead creates their own genre that separates them from the rest of the conforming rock genre. Radiohead was formed in 1982, consisting of five close friends.…
