Toxic Leadership Reflection

Improved Essays
We have all seen toxic leaders in one form or another in the Special Forces regiment. They demonstrate qualities such as selfishness, distrust, and an apparent disdain for their subordinates. Because this can be so detrimental for the function of the unit, we focus on toxic leadership and try to identify certain individuals who possess these traits in order to prevent it. While this is a very important step, are we focused too much on the individual and not enough on the system? Could there something that we are doing as an organization to bring out these traits in certain people? Instead of only focusing on toxic leaders that already exist, we should be looking into what is creating them in the first place. …show more content…
It has been my experience that toxic leaders share a similar story of some bad experience when they were put in their first leadership position on a team. Whether it was a loss of equipment, incident caused by subordinates, or just how they were treated when they arrived on the team, created an environment of distrust between the leader and his subordinates. I witnessed this first hand on my team.

We were in a heated discussion about a mission we had coming up. The team leader tried to interject with what he thought we should do, but was quickly disregarded by the team sergeant. The team sergeant said that this was his team and he would run it how he saw fit. This was not the first time our team leader was marginalized by the team sergeant in front of the team. What did this do to our captain’s impression of us as NCOs and professionals? Could that have planted the seed of distrust and resentment in our

    1. After reflecting on who or what event provided me with leadership influence I concluded there wasn’t one person or one event that has had the most effect on me to strive to become a better leader or person for that matter. Many of my past supervisors and present alike have been good and bad with more good than bad. I attempt to take pieces from each of their leadership qualities, use things I liked and stayed away from their “bad” leadership qualities I did not believe helped me grow as a leader or produce quality jobs or mission results. All the while, my own personality and beliefs intertwined with their leadership styles to make me who I am today as a leader.…

He says, “There’s just no way around it. If an organization is led by a team that is not behaviorally unified, there is no chance that it will become healthy.” This is absolutely true. If a leadership team is not able to trust one another, the entire organization will suffer. For example, Andy Stanley says, “Harboring suspicion and mistrust will eventually poison the culture of your organization.”…

Deck plate leadership, leading by example and getting to know your people. How often do we hear this? Quite a bit, as a matter of fact you hear about it but don’t necessarily see a lot of it. It is easy to sit back and do your daily work, for whatever reason it is, whether it is because we have a lot to do that day, over tasked and undermanned or plain old busy. To me leadership is getting out there and talking to the crew.…

In June 2010, I joined the United States Army to change my life. I am currently serving and as you can imagine I have experienced many things through my journey. I have had some great leadership along the way and some that were quite the opposite. During this time one person has stuck out in my mind, I will refer to him as Sergeant First Class (SFC) Smith. Although SFC Smith was a leader many aspects of his approach in which he dealt with situations led to his demise.…

During my time as the Assistant Officer in Charge, I had the unique opportunity to observe two distinctly different leadership styles, and realize the effect each had on organizational culture and climate. The command climate changed abruptly with the new commander, and I was immediately able to relate the situation in my unit to the leadership theory I was studying at the time. In Edgar Schein’s book entitled Organizational Culture and Leadership (2010), he describes how members of an organization form a shared understanding of the way things are perceived. During my tour we struggled with the misconceptions of junior sailors about the decisions the leadership was making. There was a perception that their opinions did not matter, and there welfare was not being considered.…

Firstly, from the direct level of leadership perspective there is often a semblance of mistrust, or rather misunderstanding between lower and upper commands. In such cases, I can personally recall frequently hearing comments regarding how the brigade didn’t seem to have a clue due to real or perceived unrealistic expectations placed on our Infantry battalion. Whether real or perceived, it often presented challenges which invariably add to mission creep. Given the fluidity of mission requirements at the operational level, it is easier to understand why leaders at the operational level may face significant challenges. Especially, when it comes to finding time to get out from their work areas to conduct scheduled visits to subordinate elements which are geographically dispersed.…

FM 6-22 is the Army 's keystone field manual on the characteristics and qualities of what an ideal leader should be. A figure that influences those around them and provides a source of inspiration, instills a sense of purpose and maintains the ability to motivate not only subordinates but superiors as well. Of course not every good leader can fit the mold of the ideal Army leader nor is it fair to expect perfection and alignment with FM 6-22; however all leaders both inside the military and out can learn from this field manual and continually strive for self improvement. Unfortunately not all people in a position of power or influence demonstrate the positive characteristics of leadership and even worse not many have any intentions of self…

Servant Leadership: Leading the Way to a More Just and Caring World Amberlie Silva Denver School of Nursing Servant Leadership: Leading the Way to a More Just and Caring World Throughout history, leadership has been portrayed as the sole responsibility of select individuals that were chosen through circumstance or job title to do and achieve great things (Rogers, 2009). This concept of leadership implies that decisions are made to the betterment of those in powerful positions and not to serve the needs of an entire organization. Servant leadership changes this concept and places the importance of good leadership qualities on every part of an entire organization, by motivating others to “become the…

Toxic leadership is the biggest contributor to low morale, undo stress, and most unfortunately the loss of great soldiers. While many of us have experienced toxic leadership at least once in our careers, undoubtedly we have also known great soldiers that have simply had enough and chosen to separate from the Army because of it. To me this is one of the worst effects that toxic leadership can have because it takes guys with an abundance of experience that could have been excellent Commanders and CSMs, and subsequently removed them from the pool. So why wouldn’t Soldiers just wait it out?…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

I have already utilized this knowledge to implement successful changes within my own agency that has produced positive outcomes. This program has taught me how to improve upon my own leadership skills by developing the right perspective to perceive situations in a different light. If we view every idea or situation through one lens, we are limiting our capabilities, therefore degrading our ability to realize different options or alternatives. Multi frame expands our perception, therefore providing unlimited possibilities in analyzing a situation, (Smith, 2011).…
