1. After reflecting on who or what event provided me with leadership influence I concluded there wasn’t one person or one event that has had the most effect on me to strive to become a better leader or person for that matter. Many of my past supervisors and present alike have been good and bad with more good than bad. I attempt to take pieces from each of their leadership qualities, use things I liked and stayed away from their “bad” leadership qualities I did not believe helped me grow as a leader or produce quality jobs or mission results. All the while, my own personality and beliefs intertwined with their leadership styles to make me who I am today as a leader. Four reserve activations, since 911, have forced me out of my comfort zone, made me question my leadership abilities, challenged me to overcome my fears and required me to lead others in carrying out “the mission”.

After reviewing my LPI 360 I was most deficient in numbers 28, 7 and 12. Number 28 states “Experiments and takes risks even when there is a chance of failure.” After seeing my low score of 6.4 on 28 I realized that maybe I don’t take many risks and actually I don’t have an issue with that. Taking risks in the Coast Guard today is something that could end your career if the risk taking goes wrong. If I can accomplish a given task or mission, per Coast Guard policy and procedures, why should I take a risk. In addition, I am not sure what type of risk they mean. To me risk could mean, walking against the light at an intersection or going skydiving. At my civilian job I take risks on a daily basis. I always conduct some type of risk management, weighing the end goal with the risk I am taking and what could be the outcome of the risk if the action or situation goes wrong. Generally any risk I take at work, could have an effect on my partner. Having him board a vessel at sea in less than favorable conditions may not be worth the enforcement
