“Genetic modification of food would have serious and negative implications for the environment, the economy, and human health” is what I believe the author was trying to persuade when writing this essay. He/ she seemed to follow the Toulmin method effectively by providing Grounds,Warrant and Backing to their Claim. At the same time stating what the opposition to their claim was. I found the essay to be structured well for I followed the information easily. I liked the fact that the author kept both opinions alive throughout the essay, even though you could clearly tell what side of the matter they were on.
The Author’s “claim” being that after a “closer examination of genetic engineering of food” we will realize …show more content…
The first example of all three comes in the first few sentences of the second paragraph. “Food engineering does not aid global food security, as it is not sustainable” is what the Toulmin method calls “grounds”. The “warrant” being “the engineering of food can cause unintended harm to the environment”. The “backing” of this statement comes from a source that the author cites and seems to be reputable and published that “pollen grains from genetically- modified maize kill the larvae of the monarch butterfly”. Another example of the author using grounds, warrant and backing happens with this line “genetically-modified foods have adverse effects on human health”. Following that they cite another source who wrote “Everything You Need to Know About Genetically Modified Foods” which stated that “consumers of these foods suffer from allergies and gastrointestinal complications” which I am guessing is partly due to genetically engineered food including genes of organisms that are not part of our food chain, which is information also taken from the previously stated book and would provide the backing to the previously stated warrant. They slightly touch on the subject of the economy mentioning the high cost which would just widen the gap between the rich and the poor providing more backing to the …show more content…
It names the individual who wrote the initial article of which this author is debating and happens to be a supporter of modified and engineered foods. The author (of the essay) provides many examples from the opposite side of why they are for these altered foods which they then call “unrealistic” and provides facts such as the absence of the EPA supporting the claim that genetically engineered food is safe for human consumption.
The author closes the essay in a very assertive way which is what the Toulmin method mentions is a way to ensure you’re not argued against. They reiterate the points proven throughout the piece of work adding that the risk associated with the genetic modification of food far outweighs the benefits, leaving little room in your mind for
