There are many ways to persuade a reader: character, logic, emotion, arrangement of the points, and rebuttal of the topic. For an essay to influence the reader, it needs to effectively use at least two of these methods. “The Undercover Parent” by Harlan Coben is more persuasive than “The Locavore Myth: Why Buying from Nearby Farmers Won’t Save the Planet” by James McWilliams because it uses character and emotion in a more effective manner. In “The Undercover Parent,” Coben uses emotion to reach out and grasp the audience.…

It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. Now, after years of writing significantly longer academic papers that stretch far beyond a simple paragraph, my style and the depth of my topics have evolved based on what I’ve read. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

The structure of an essay is very important. It helps a reader easily follow an author’s message. The structure of Rachel Carson’s essay was successful in informing its readers of the effect chemicals have on nature and how this would affect the future of the human race. “Chemicals sprayed on croplands or forest or gardens lie long in the soil, entering into living organisms, passing from one to another in a chain of poisoning and death” (Carson 613). This statement explains to the reader the effect of chemicals on all living beings.…

“Designer Babies” is a layman’s term used to describe what is known in the medical field as genetically engineered of human gametes, zygotes and embryos also known as germ line modification, (Wikipedia). There are countless problems surrounding designer babies, an example being a gene does not code just for one function, thus a gene medication can be used to solve a problem while it causes another problem involuntarily, (world press 2013, April 28). People have questions about this process such as; is designing a baby ethical? Then there are problems attached to this process that give rise to questions that are impossible to answer, such as; If the process were made acceptable and ethical by members of society and would the parent be modifying only for medical purposes or in hopes to have the most “perfect baby”, (Debate.org).…

There are many writings which can be taken two different ways. Either it can persuade the reader to his or her opinion or turn them away. The strategies used in an essay can have an effect on the reader.
