It is clear that the narrator seems to come from a rather privileged and wealthy lifestyle, since he is able to borrow his mother’s vehicle. After him and his friends’ encounter the innocent female that was with the greaser character and attempt to rape her but are caught, he runs out into the woods leaving his mother’s car out in the open and is left wondering what will happen to it. Undoubtedly it seems as he is in an extremely messy situation; thankfully, at the end he discovers that the car is pretty damaged but the tires were intact and is still driveable. “There was no windshield, the headlights were staved in, and the body looked as if it had been sledge-hammered for a quarter a shot the country fair, but the tires were inflated to regulation pressure” (Boyle 6). The fact the car was still driveable was Boyle’s intention to convey the message of second chances; since essentially the narrator will still be able to “drive” back to his old lifestyle of wealth and
