Scientists say drinking apple juice before bed can increase our chance of having a happy, vivid dream. Obviously, our dreamer didn’t hear about this research. A poor woodcutter with a wife and two children struggles to provide enough food for his family. The children, Hansel and Gretel, are abandoned in the woods by their parents, to fend for themselves. They face starvation and get captured by an evil witch in the woods. The witch gives them plenty of food in order to fatten the children up and eat them. Looking through Freud’s psychoanalytic lens, we can see that the dreamer is bombarded with starvation imagery, relating to the oral stage, and seems to have trouble in this stage. The witch shouts, “‘[now] I have them. They will not get away from me again’”, displaying anal imagery (4). The manifest content of the witch keeping the children inside and locking them out relates to the latent content of anal imagery. The latent meaning behind this image of keeping the children locked inside and never leaving symbolizes constipation. Constipation is a sign that the dreamer is now in the anal stage. The witch also “[carries] him to a little stall, where she locked him behind a cage door”, demonstrating the same constipation imagery, proving the dreamer reached the anal stage (4). Images of obedience are shown when the tale explains that “Gretel began to cry, but it was all for nothing. She had to do what the witch demanded” (4). Anal imagery is not only fifth, garbage, and excretion anal imagery, but also signs of self-control and obedience. The fact that Gretel has to do whatever the witch tells her and is obedient towards the witch validates the dreamer is in the anal stage at this point of the fairytale. The final piece of evidence when the children find “chests of pearls and precious stones” in “every corner” of the witch’s house (4). The excessive amount of stones and pearls is a sign of hoarding. This image of having so many of one thing indicates the dreamer is in the anal stage. After this detail, the story says that Hansel “[fills] his pockets” and Gretel “filled her apron full”. They are each hoarding the stones, and shoving many of them into small places. The dreamer conquers the oral fixation and makes it into the anal stage because of the numerous amount of anal imagery
