Over the course of April, my group was delegated the task of reading the book Staying Fat For Sara Byrnes. This book shows the detail of a senior who went through a tragic childhood, only to be faced with another challenge in her last year of high school. The book overall shows a lot of courage. Why is courage important, and where do we see it?

What is courage? Well, Google says it’s “the ability to do something that frightens one.” Putting this into your own words you could say it’s being vulnerable or doing something that could be nerve wracking. Think of something that takes a lot of courage. Usually courage is something that can help us grow or would make you nervous. Putting yourself out there helps you grow because you become more comfortable

The story shows many tough places where showing courage could be dangerous or life threatening. An event really stands out without much thought. In the last few chapters, Mark Britain decides to come clean about an abortion after denying it previously. Marks religion prohibits abortion, but he still does the right thing by coming out about the event. His emotional status shows this as well, “Then his voice cracked and tears ran down his cheeks, and he turned to Jody” he struggled to say. Marks struggle shows how much courage and guts it took to stand up in front of the class, even though it was the right thing to do and he would regret not completing the small speech. Another spot of courage in Staying Fat consists of the time when Lemry stands up to Mautz in front of the class. A quote from class, “‘That’s right,’ Lemry said. ‘You’re the vice principal. The vice principal in charge of discipline. If I’m having a discipline problem, I’ll call you. Right now, I’d like you to leave...” This is a good example because it can connect with some of the current day issues. In our present society we have power imbalances. These are necessary, but when you have a situation like this it can be challenging to have enough courage to stand up. It could even cost you your job. This really shows how much courage it took Lemey to stand up to

In the book speak I have heard many people say that the main character Melinda Sordino shows more fear and resentment than courage in the book speak. In my perspective she was very brave for even putting up and living life after what had happened to her. Many people would become depressed over what had happened or just given up on life itself but not her and Melinda shows courage throughout the book not in any bold extravagant ways but through her own little examples. In the book when they talk about what happened to her at the party that night she was raped she left the tree shaded area and went back to the house where the party was and called 911 and already that shows courage being able to even try to do something even anything over such a serious thing like rape is so difficult and brace especially for the victim to do.…
