How has the understanding of [the] universe in China changed in last hundreds of years?
Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius once said: "He who does not know what the world [does] not know where he is, and he who does not know for what purpose the world exists, does not know who he is, nor what the world is." It is true that a person 's self-identity is hugely affected by his or her view of the world, and that a country or race 's self-image is based on its understanding of the universe. In the last century, China experienced an abrupt shift on the cosmology, which make people suddenly lost their identity in the fast developing world. The issue is far more complicated than it is on the first sight, and the process of is far more struggling. By analyzing the history of cosmology in China, modern society is able to not only gain a better knowledge of [-the-] Chinese, but to look at itself from a different angle.
Early cosmology in China
Ancient Chinese cosmology is different from the cosmology in Greeks and other ancient civilizations in many ways. There are basically three universe model, among them the most archaic one the Gai Tian Model and the most advanced one The Hun Tian model. According to the models, the earth is flat, floating on water, and the heaven is around. On the heaven lived gods, but beyond the heaven and the flat earth is infinitive space.
