Literary Essay Life experiences can change people for the better or for the worst. It seems that life experience makes people the way that they are. For the main character Beth her life experience during the story changed her life. In “The Truth About Sharks” is a realistic fiction story by Joan Bauer. In this story the protagonist Beth first wakes up to an alarm clock like a foghorn. Soon she is informed that she has to go to her sexist Uncle Al’s birthday party. She goes to the store to go and buy a new outfit for the party. While she is shopping, she is accused of being a shoplifter by a rotten security guard Officer Groton. The she then is picked up in a squad car being brought down to the police station. Somehow Beth figures a way out to prove the officer that she is not guilty. People change because there are certain circumstance that make the have to act differently. Beth changed the way she was when she started to get accused of shoplifting. Beth had to become protective of herself. Beth became more protective when Security Guard Groton asked her to remove the supposedly “shoplifted pants” then Beth responded no to Gorton's request. Beth went and talked to the manager of the store and told him that she was going to sue because of her being falsely arrested there. She was bold by her saying that she was going to sue them. Next, Beth demanded that security guard Groton came in and apologized for arresting in the store on the assumption of Beth shoplifting. This was a very bold act because it made Groton admit she was wrong, also she got transferred to a different store of the clothing store franchise.
