Let say that one might be in love with the colour of blue, however another person might be feeling the opposite from that. Just like how the characteristic is displayed by the characters in the story, it does not matter if you are a Thai person or not, you can still enjoy the spicy food. The variety in term of cultural aspect is something that should be overviewed widely by the society as we live in a multicultural population. The characters in the story are just like the typical people in real life which makes it relatable to the readers. The interaction between the characters are all warm as, for instance, the positive relationship between the teacher, Mr Winfree and his student, Albert indicates a peaceful and ideal society. *Not to mention that how Mr Winfree takes part in making sure his students consume a healthy diet when he tells Rajiv to eat a healthier meal in the next day, which shows the typical responsibility of adults in taking care of the youth. From the family value perspective, Albert shows his true personality when he is being honest about how he dislikes the Thai food when he is with his family. His parents also display a playful side of them with their children as can be seen when they play a prank on Albert by giving him spicy food to eat. The flow of the story starts smoothly on how everyone except Albert keens on eating spicy dishes that keeps the readers hooked and anticipated to know what is possible to happen afterwards. Nevertheless, there could be two possibilities towards the ending; whether the stigma of Albert’s view on Thai food is going to change eventually or Albert still remains as someone who dislikes that spicy food. Apart from the plot, we can analyze the style of the language used is precisely expressed by the author in most of the sentences. One of my favorite lines from the story is “All I can taste is guilt. It tastes a lot like chilli.” The descriptive style shown in the story is by using the unique metaphorical expression which is absolutely entertaining to read.
Without any doubt, I would like to recommend that the short story “Hot and Spicy” by Oliver Phommavanh should be read by the public as it shows us multiple view in the aspect of culture, family, and society.
