Canada as a first world country is a highly sought after final destination for immigrants seeking a better life. It is no surprise then that the government of Canada has strict guidelines in place to allow in only those who are deemed to be beneficial in improving the nation as a whole. However this would exclude a vast majority of migrants who do not have the right skills, education, or capital to be let into the country to immigrate or work. The solution, the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP), a policy enacted by the government to allow employers to hire workers from outside the country. Although this policy was passed with good intentions today it is clear to see that employers have taken advantage of this policy for economic reasons that stem from race, class, and gender in order to increase the profitability of their businesses at the expense of the foreign workers. For the sake of this assignment the main topic will focus on the policy concerning agriculture, namely the seasonal agricultural worker’s program (SAWP) and the changes that have been ratified by the Canadian government in the name of national interest. Before examining the controversy surrounding the TFWP and SAWP, it is essential to understand how SAWP works and how it affects the labourers under its jurisdiction.
