The novel would have been so different if Holden was able to change. Change is Holden’s biggest obstacle. He is constantly going back to the source of his depression and loneliness. If he had overcome this obstacle that he is constantly going back and isolating himself, Holden would be living a better life. “The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody'd move. You could go there a hundred times, and that Eskimo would still be just finished catching those two fish, the birds would still be on their way south, the deers would still be drinking out of that water hole, with their pretty antlers and their pretty, skinny legs, and that squaw with the naked bosom would still be weaving that same blanket. Nobody'd be different. The only thing that would be different would be you.”(Salinger, P.65). The quote tells the readers that the museum does not change. Everything in that museum would remain the same except you. You are the only object or person to change in the entire museum. This quote indicates that Holden does not want to change and that is why he likes the museum. He prefers to stay a childhood and not change to become an adult. He does not want to become an adult because he is afraid of change. That is the main source and reason why Holden does not want to become an adult. One could say that Holden is a character that does not want to become an adult because he does not like to be surrounded by
