The picture I decided to create us entitled “Loss” and it is all inside of Holden’s head. Holden believes that innocence is lost in growing up, that is why this image is called “Loss”. From left to right darkness slowly takes over the drawing. The light side is centered with the Museum of Natural History. In the top quote, Holden tells the reader that the museum never changes. He finds comfort in the idea of this. Holden also wishes that life worked like this, he does not want things to change or grow up. He does not want children to become older and lose their innocence. Under the Museum is a field with children playing in it. This symbolizes all of the purity that Holden wants to keep safe in the world. …show more content…
The ducks start off light and slowly become darker. Holden thinks that when a person grows up they slowly become phonies and lose their innocence. The ducks are flying towards the ice, where all innocence seems to be lost. Holden doesn’t know where it all goes with age. In the bottom quote he asks the cab driver where the ducks go after the lagoon becomes frozen over. What he really wants to know is where the child goes when we all grow up. Where does the curiosity and happiness go? Sometimes Holden thinks that the ducks fly away, but the cab driver says they might just stay in the lake. Meaning that the child may still be in their soul, or as Holden thinks, it is gone forever. Under the ducks and the quotes is the red hunting hat with a silhouette of a boy. The song starts out with a person getting drunk with “friends”, as Holden did many times. He calls them phonies, yet he still spends time with them. Holden doesn’t think anyone wants to spend time with him. They “pretend” to like him, they are phony around everyone. Holden is constantly criticizing people, but he never acknowledges that he is. He does get bored with people being phonies, and he is afraid of younger children becoming as fake as his friends. In the song, when it says “…it’s bumming me out,” it is like when Holden randomly becomes depressed. It always makes him confused as to why he gets sad. In the chorus of the song, the writer asks what people want from him. This is how Holden feels when people ask him about school. He drops out of so many places and doesn’t know why people still want him to try. He feels as if the world is against him and doesn’t want him to succeed. He thinks all of the phonies are too much to deal with going through high school. “I say ‘jump’ and you start jumping.” Is talking about how people will do anything that you ask them to if they think it will make you happy. Holden thinks that making people happy by not acting like themselves is phony behavior. In the second verse, the song talks about an average day. In New York, Holden stays up late because he cannot sleep. Also, when the song talks about drinking to maintain sanity,
