“Like hell it is.” I took it off and looked at it. I sort of closed one eye, like I was taking aim at it. “This is a people shooting hat,” I said. “I shoot people in this hat.” (pg 22)
Both of these quotes, recommend the themes of protecting childhood innocence, and alienation. The first quote shows how Holden perceives others. He is alway hiding, and considers everybody “phonies.” this is his way of going against adulthood. He doesn 't always agree with the others. He wants to protect this life of his, even though he is getting older now. His mind hasn’t matured because he is stuck in his own world. To analyze this quote you understand that Holden likes the idea, that kids are innocent, and never looking bad or having to make adult decisions.
“Im standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff -- I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.” (pg 173)
This quote relates to Holden trying to protect himself from growing up. He believes his role is to save everyone and protect children from adulthood. His beliefs are that as children life is pure and he must be the protector, from changing there simple ways. This quote once again is an example of Holden creating a whole nother world in which he can 't get out of. He doesn 't realize how blind he is to reality.
“I think that one of these days," he said, "you 're going to have to find out where you want to go. And then you 've got to start going there. But immediately. You can 't afford to lose a minute. Not you.” (pg
