He goes to lunch with a coworker who asks how he is doing. He quickly changes the subject. He goes about his workday and returns home as soon as he is able. He meets one of his neighbors who has walked his dog every day the same way, rather abusively, it seems, for eight years. However, Meursault does not seem to mind this and thinks the dog may actually deserve it. On this night, he runs into Raymond, another of his neighbors. Meursault knows that Raymond is a pimp, even though he claims to be a warehouse guard. Meursault is the only one in their building who will give Raymond any attention and often finds himself listening to Raymond’s stories. When Raymond asks him this night over for dinner, Meursault agrees. When Raymond asks him if he’d like to be friends with him, Meursault gives a vague reply. Raymond then goes on to tell of his mistress. He had reason to believe that she cheated on him. When he confronted her by beating her up, she left him. This caused the mistress’s Arab brother to come after Raymond. He, however, wants to take her back, despite her cheating. His plan is to lure her into bed and then spit in her face if she accepts. His goal is to torture her and humiliate her more. Raymond asks Meursault for help in writing this deceptive letter. Meursault claims he has nothing better going on and agrees to do this.
