The stranger was published in 1942 and takes place in French Algeria in the 1940’s. The french began invading Algeria in the 1830’s and by the 1940’s, Algiers was considered French territory. Because of this, French and Christian customs played a large role in societal expectations and anyone who did not conform to those values, was considered an outsider. Manifested throughout the book, it is seen that the French have a superior mindset over the Arabs. Raymond Sintes constantly beat his mistress yet he was not convicted solely due to the fact that his mistress cheated on him and cheating was seen just as bad as abusive behavior. Character was often used as a deciding factor of whether someone should be convicted or not. This is shown as Meursault is put on trial for the murder of the Arab. However, it is not the murder that gets him convicted because killing an Arab was not seen as a crime worth the death penalty but rather it was the threat that his character posed to the moral basis of society that led to his death.
