“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”— Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”
The skills of reading and writing are both necessary to develop strong mental health and keep up an active and creative imagination. The human mind can grow from numerous activities, some of these include keeping up good physical health, eating right and learning something new. However, arguably the most effective way to refresh and exercise the mind, is reading and writing. Writing helps our memory and helps us communicate information with each other via storytelling. Writing is also a good method of relaxation, scientists say that the act of writing is comparable to meditation, as your breathing

Individuals who do not read or do not read often, are likely to have undesirable opinions of themselves and their abilities. Many people who do not read or write feel slow, they feel as if they are not on the same mental level than those who do read and write. While this is true in most cases, it does not mean the person who reads and writes is always the smartest person. The people who do not read most likely skipped out on it during grade school, which makes them feel left out or left behind. “How could I read on the level of adults if I haven’t read on the level of children?” This mindset is what holds these people back. As long as you can read the basics, you can pick up a sizeable amount of books and start learning, this will increase your vocabulary and allow you to advance into reading other books. A lot of individuals think books are boring, they are not fast paced and up to date with modern times since we have “advanced” electronics such as, television and smart phones. This makes sitting down reading quietly feel dull compared to what is going on in the fast moving world we live in today. However, reading will just improve your skills allowing you to be more effective in the fast world. A person who does not read can feel as if the world is against them. They can feel overwhelmed and undermined. Almost anyone can get into reading, however. It does not take much. Just grab a book you may be interested in, establish a schedule in which you are going to read, preferably at least once a day, and then continue on that path. Hopefully the person would enjoy the subject matter of the book and continue their journey in literature and eventually one day consider creating their own piece, which may be something as simple as an online

Reading is undervalued in today’s society. Not many students understand the importance of reading and how useful it is in life. When I was, younger reading was never my strongest subject. Reading at a lower level than others in my class made me feel less educated. It wasn’t like I pushed reading away, it was just something that I wasn’t interested in.…

Reading is something many people take for granted; in fact, it is sometimes a struggle to persuade people to read at all. In schools, there are typically a group of students that are “below-average” who have an “I don’t care” type of attitude towards learning and reading. This attitude causes them to receive poor grades in their classes and they make life strenuous on themselves. On the other spectrum are the areas where being able to read means you have great intelligence and great privilege. Reading and books aren’t as common and people aren’t gaining as much information as they could.…

Even in school it was hard for me to read because it was boring I would be falling asleep in class trying to be reading a book every time there was just something about it I couldn’t do it but like he said page 52 “it didn’t bother me if I was the lowest reader in class”. In my English/reading classes we would have to read a book and then write about so I would skim it and then write my essay. But this is probably why I really don’t…

As children, we are taught that the ability to read is important and are even required to have a period of silent sustained reading. There is an implication that reading is always literary, however, there isn’t one specific subject that is tied to reading. I’ve read history books, books about animals, encyclopedias, anything to just read. Not only did it deepen my passion for books, it helped me develop my writing skills. I gained knowledge from the books that I read which evolved into writing my own stories.…

In “How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading” by John Holt, he explains his experience in school, as a student. He argues how reading and/or English should be fun, exciting, and adventurous. I agree with John Holt but you have to read the books that the school gives you. As a kid I did not really like when the teacher called me to read out loud, I preferred the teacher reading it to us.…

As is seen in my experience with reading, people lose interest in things they once loved when it becomes a chore to do so. I used to be a passionate reader when I was younger. I would eagerly pick out numerous books from the library and spend hours at a time reading, loving how I was able to suspend my disbelief for the sake of enjoyment. However, as I grew older, it became more and more difficult to set aside time for reading. When looking back at it now, I often make excuses by saying that ‘I was too busy with school’ or that ‘I was too busy spending time with my friends’.…

In my experience, I find literacy most enjoyable when I am intrigued and interested in the topic or book. I feel that if it is forced, I lose the passion to read or write and instead find it tedious and dreadful. I have to admit, my feelings toward literature changed as I grew older, especially entering high school. In high school, more work is assigned and I feel forced to read and write things that I do not feel too passionate about. Although there were some assignments I found fun and interesting, it left me with less time for my own reading and writing for my own pleasure.…

I can read and get into the book anytime of the day, in the morning, lunch time, afternoon, or even at night. I’ve even skipped my lunch time because I was reading, and don’t even feel hungry. Anyways, I am the “picky” reader like I am today would probably be the result of my laziness, my family and school in the past. Before, when I went the school in Vietnam, we don’t really have to read, at all, Vietnamese school doesn’t seem to encourage us to read books that is not related to our assignment in class, the most I would read is manga, and comics during our thirty minutes break time.…
