In my experience, I find literacy most enjoyable when I am intrigued and interested in the topic or book. I feel that if it is forced, I lose the passion to read or write and instead find it tedious and dreadful. I have to admit, my feelings toward literature changed as I grew older, especially entering high school. In high school, more work is assigned and I feel forced to read and write things that I do not feel too passionate about. Although there were some assignments I found fun and interesting, it left me with less time for my own reading and writing for my own pleasure. Because of the busyness of school, my journal writing has come to a stop as it became more and more irrelevant overtime. On the contrary, my love for stories has stuck with me until now. When I do read books I enjoy on my free time, I find it engaging and amusing, as well as a good source of entertainment. Furthermore, my opinion on literature is more complex than simply liking or disliking it. I also feel a sense of motivation to improve my communication skills. Through the assignments I receive from school like this one, I don’t solely feel drudgery, I feel motivated and compelled to do well and improve in communicating my ideas. Some lessons are personal, while others are strategies that help me in the process of understanding ideas and communicating. When I used to write in a journal, putting my thoughts onto paper aided me in reflecting on my experiences and helped me in dealing with situations I found myself in. As a growing person, these lessons have assisted me throughout my life and have given me physical memories I can look back on and remember. In addition, through reading and writing, I have developed methods to me stay organized with my thoughts and schemes. When analyzing a text or writing an essay, I have learned how to stay focused on my task and keep my planning and ideas organized. Moreover, since I strive to become a better communicator, the writing process has helped me get better at creating work I am proud of. I have learned and adapted various techniques over the years through the teachings of school, and I am positive I can further refine my skills.
