At first he is a dedicated “firefighter,” who does not question authority and does what he is told. At the beginning of the novel (part I), Guy meets this queer young lady who converses with him. The young lady’s name is Clarisse. Clarisse questions whether or not Guy is happy. This angers Guy to the point he does not want to talk to her Yet Guy still like Clarisse and considers her a friend. But Clarisse's question makes Guy think on whether or not he really is happy. Besides the fact that he is not happy, he is also really boring. Everyday Guy wakes up, goes to work to burn books, then goes home to later go to sleep. This is what Guy does everyday. Also, Not only is Guy’s daily life boring, but he also has no interests. Guy has no interest in having friends ergo he has no friends, except clarisse whom Guy considers a friend. Because Guy has no friends he is very anti-social. As a “firefighter” Guy was taught to not care about books and just to burn books. Thus, Guy does not show attachment to books.
