The Ebola virus is gaining worldwide fame due to its sensational outbreak originating from Sierra Leone. The outbreaks of the virus have been recognized and effectively dealt with in the past, but the present outbreak is becoming a overwhelming challenge. Approximately there have been 15,000 suspected cases of the disease and 6,000 confirmed deaths so far. The horrifying visual hemorrhagic symptoms caused by the Ebola virus include internal and external bleeding as well as the fear inducing statistics that the virus has a 90% mortality rate have both contributed to virus’s swift, overnight infamy. The virus and its genus were both named after Zaire (which is now the domestic Republic of the Congo), the country where it was first observed. It is suspected to be very close to Marburg virus. In 2010 it is renamed as “Ebola virus” to circumvent confusion. The natural reservoir of the virus is bats and in particular fruit bats. The virus spreads y direct contact with blood or body fluids of an infected human or animal. Airborne virus has not been observed yet.
