For one, they slightly believe that the component of a male’s biology is distinctly different from a females but they also do take note that a contributing factor maybe the way gender is defined socially and culturally in society make a tremendous impact. According to Hodgetts, much of the standardized tests represent the outperforming gender as females. In addition, she highlights the media depicting higher rate of “suspension, expulsion, behavioral problems, and early school-leaving” have been the common image towards male students (Hodgetts, 2007, 466). However, Hodgetts provides a glimpse of why boys have been referenced as underachievers. She further details the possibilities by comparing the girls as passive with “passive“ subjects such as reading, listen, or copying material whereas boys are more categorized for their active persona for active subjects such as math and science.
